How to Change Your Telegram Phone Number (2026)
New SIM, local number abroad, or an old line about to be cancelled—if you want the same Telegram account, change the linked number in the app. Changing the number swaps the login credential; it is not a fresh registration that wipes history.
Path: Settings → Edit profile → Change Number. After verifying the new number, chats, groups, and channels usually stay; two-step and recovery email typically stay too. You must still be able to sign in, and the new number must receive codes.
Prep and mobile steps
- Confirm you can sign in: old number still gets SMS, or at least one device stays online
- Confirm the new number receives codes; keep network/proxy stable
- If two-step is on, know the cloud password; set recovery email first—see two-step
- Settings → tap your name/photo → Edit profile
- Tap the current number → Change Number
- Confirm that history stays and the new number becomes the login credential
- Enter the new number in international format (no leading 0)
- Enter the SMS code; then the two-step password if enabled
- When it says the number is updated, the old number can no longer open this account
Desktop usually cannot start a number change—use mobile. Multi-device rules: login guide.
Change number vs re-register—and checks afterward
| Change number | Register with a new number | |
|---|---|---|
| Chat history | Kept | Gone |
| Group/channel ownership | Kept | Lost |
| @username | Kept | Must reset; old name may be taken |
| Prerequisite | Current account sign-in | None |
If you can still open the old account, change the number—do not re-register and wipe everything. Afterward: Settings → Devices (end stranger sessions); Privacy → Phone Number; save critical invite links to Saved Messages. Baseline: security settings.
Common failures—and when to stop
| Symptom | Fix first |
|---|---|
| New number gets no code | Spam folder → voice call → country code; SMS troubleshooting |
| Too many attempts | Wait ~24 hours; stop spamming Resend |
| Old number dead and all devices offline | Change-number usually impossible; new registration only |
| Forgot two-step password | Recovery email; otherwise ~7-day wait |
| Situation | Order | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| About to cancel the old SIM | Finish change-number first | Killing the old line first |
| Only need a new login number | Change number | Delete and re-register |
| Number updated + Devices/privacy checked | Stop | Resend loops that rate-limit you |
FAQ
Will I lose my Telegram chats when I change my phone number?
No. Changing the bound number only updates your login credential. Cloud chats, groups, channel subscriptions, Saved Messages and contacts stay on the same account. Secret chats remain on the devices where they were started.
Do I need my two-step verification password to change numbers?
If two-step verification is enabled, Telegram asks for your cloud password during the change. Forgot it? Reset via recovery email, or wait about 7 days without one. Set both up first in our two-step verification guide.
Can I change numbers if my old SIM is already dead?
Only if you can still sign in — via an active session on another device or SMS to the old number. If the old number is gone and every device is logged out, recovery is effectively impossible; register a new account instead.
After changing my number, do my groups, channels and username change?
No — everything stays. Changing the bound number only swaps your login credential. Your admin roles, channel ownership and @username are all preserved, and to others you are still the same account. Contacts, Saved Messages and Premium status are unaffected too: it is like changing the key while the house and furniture stay put.
Once I switch to a new number, can someone re-register the old one to take over my account?
They cannot take over your existing account. As soon as the change succeeds, the old number is unbound and loses all login access to your account. If someone later registers with that old number, they simply get a brand-new empty account and never touch your data. Just remember your login credential is now the new number — stop treating the old one as a recovery route.
Do I need a new country code, or is a same-country SIM swap the same flow?
Same flow either way: Settings → Edit profile → Change Number. Only the international format and SMS delivery differ. Do not re-register if you can still sign in — changing the bound number keeps chats and group roles.
After a number change, do two-step verification, Premium and Saved Messages stay?
Yes. Only the login phone number changes. Cloud password, recovery email, Premium, Saved Messages, username and admin roles stay on the account. Still review Devices and phone-number privacy afterward for leftover sessions.
New number cannot receive codes yet — can I change the bound number anyway?
No. The change requires a code on the new number. Fix delivery first (filters, proxy, voice call), then come back. While the old SIM still works, do not cancel it early.
What is the difference between changing the number and deleting then re-registering?
Changing the number keeps the same account’s chats, groups and username. Deleting and re-registering creates a brand-new empty account — old data does not return. If you only need a new login number, change the bound number; do not delete.
