Telegram SMS Code Not Arriving? 5 Causes and the Fix for Each One

Number entered, Send tapped, then silence—Android Telegram signup fails on the code step more than any other. Causes stack: SMS filters, proxy, voice fallback, rate limits, modded APKs. Work top-down by frequency.

Codes usually arrive within tens of seconds; after about two minutes switch to the voice call instead of idle waiting. No SMS → check spam folders. Spinning send → fix proxy first. “Too many attempts” → stop for about 24 hours. Do not default to rented numbers—see SMS platform risks.

Fixes: filter, proxy, voice, rate limit, package

Filter: Overseas senders land in OEM spam boxes with no banner. Whitelist the sender.

Proxy: The request may never reach Telegram. Change nodes until telegram.org opens—see access guide.

Voice: After a wait, use “Didn’t get the code?” for a spoken call. Stop hammering resend.

Too many attempts: Tied to the phone number—new Wi‑Fi or phone will not clear it. Full signup path: registration guide.

Package: Random “Chinese Telegram” APKs break registration. Reinstall from the download page; install errors: Android install fixes.

Still stuck—and the same code path on later logins

Temporary range throttling happens; try again hours later or next morning. After signup, new-device logins reuse the same code system—login guide. Domestic numbers can register; missing codes are usually filter/proxy, not “this number is banned forever.”

FAQ

How long should I wait for the Telegram verification code?

Codes normally arrive within 30 seconds. After two minutes, stop waiting — tap "Didn't receive the code?" and request a voice call instead. Telegram will phone you and read the code aloud, which bypasses SMS filtering entirely.

Why does Telegram say "too many attempts" when I never got a code?

Every tap of "resend" counts as an attempt, whether or not the SMS reached you. The flood limit attaches to your phone number, so switching devices or networks does nothing. It lifts on its own, usually within 24 hours.

Can I register Telegram with a Google Voice or VoIP number?

Usually not. Telegram blocks most VoIP and disposable number ranges from registration, and the code simply never sends. Use a real mobile number from a carrier — it is only used for verification and can be hidden from everyone afterwards.

Should I use an SMS-code / virtual-number service instead?

No for any account you care about. Rented and shared numbers are easy to reclaim and often inherit spam history. Troubleshoot delivery and use a number you control; see our SMS-code platform risk article before buying a shortcut.

The screen says the code was sent to my Telegram app — where is it?

If that number already has an active session, Telegram delivers the login code inside the old app, not by SMS. Check other phones, tablets or desktops still signed in. Lost those devices? Wait for the on-screen timer, then switch to SMS or a voice call.

The voice-call option never rings — what then?

Confirm the phone can take normal calls and isn’t blocking unknown/international callers with Do Not Disturb. A proxy only affects requests to Telegram, not carrier voice. If it still never rings, stop tapping resend to avoid “too many attempts,” retry later, and make sure you’re on an official client — not a modded APK.

Will a second SIM bypass “too many attempts” on my main number?

No — the limit sits on the number you flooded. A second SIM is a different number and a fresh registration, not an unlock for the first. The original number still needs ~24 hours; for a long-term account, use a number you control rather than an SMS-code platform shortcut.

It says the code was sent, but SMS and voice never arrive — what first?

Check spam/filtered SMS, then try voice. Confirm proxy is stable and the client is official. If that number already has a Telegram session elsewhere, the code may appear inside the old app — not as SMS — matching the five causes in this article.

After 24 hours I still see “too many attempts” — is the number permanently banned?

Usually it’s still a flood limit, not a permanent ban. Keep waiting and retry in a calmer window; don’t hammer rented SMS platforms. If the login UI explicitly says the account is banned, use the account-appeal path — don’t mix that with “code not received.”
