Telegram Desktop Setup on Windows & Mac: Full Walkthrough (2026)

Telegram Desktop installers are small; with a working network, download-to-login often takes only a few minutes. Windows and macOS steps are similar—differences are called out below. Two places people stall: SmartScreen / Gatekeeper warnings they are afraid to click through, and scanning the QR while the phone is offline.

Before you start, check three things: current Desktop builds typically need Windows 10+ (trust the installer notes); macOS must meet the client minimum; and the PC needs a path to Telegram servers—same as mobile. If the app opens but messages spin forever, that is usually a connection problem, not a bad install.

Windows and macOS install

Windows: use the download page or telegram.org Desktop, grab the official tsetup installer, and avoid random “Chinese Desktop” packs from file hosts. Run the installer with the default path. If Microsoft Defender / SmartScreen flags an unknown app, verify the digital signature is Telegram FZ-LLC before you continue; stop if the signer is wrong. After install you can launch immediately—log in first, then change language.

macOS: the official .dmg and the Mac App Store both work. Open the dmg, drag Telegram into Applications, and click Open if Gatekeeper warns about an internet download. Intel and Apple Silicon usually share one universal build. The App Store path is convenient for updates; features match the site build.

Do not hunt for a separate “Chinese installer.” Desktop Chinese uses the same official language pack as mobile—see change language.

QR login, then language and proxy

  1. On the PC choose Log in by QR Code and leave the code on screen
  2. On your already-logged-in phone: Settings → Devices → Link Desktop Device
  3. Scan; if two-step verification is on, enter the cloud password on the PC

QR login skips SMS, so the phone must be online inside Telegram. No phone client yet? Start from all platforms. Multi-device rules and kicking unknown sessions: login guide. After login, import Chinese (or another language) if needed; if messages keep spinning, set SOCKS5 or MTProto under Settings → Advanced → Connection type—see proxy setup and the Desktop guide. Phone and PC proxies are independent; configure both if you use both.

FAQ

Does Telegram Desktop work without the phone being online?

Yes — after the initial QR login. Telegram Desktop maintains its own independent connection to Telegram's servers, so your phone can be off or out of battery and the desktop app keeps sending and receiving normally. Only the login moment itself requires the phone.

Should I install Telegram Desktop or the Microsoft Store version?

For most people Telegram Desktop from telegram.org is the better choice: it updates faster and ships every feature first. The Microsoft Store and Mac App Store builds work fine but trail behind on updates. The current desktop version is 5.12.1.

Why is there no Secret Chat option in Telegram Desktop?

By design. Secret chats use device-bound end-to-end encryption and can only be started from mobile apps. The desktop client covers everything else — cloud chats, channels, groups, file transfer — but sensitive end-to-end conversations stay on your phone.

Desktop is signed in but messages keep spinning — what now?

Usually the PC network path to Telegram is blocked while the phone works. Configure a system proxy or set Settings → Advanced → Connection type to a SOCKS5/MTProto proxy, then confirm telegram.org loads. Phone-online does not automatically fix a desktop without the same network path.

Desktop from telegram.org or the Microsoft/Mac App Store?

Prefer Telegram Desktop from telegram.org for faster updates and the full feature set. Store builds work but often lag. Either way, the publisher/signature should still resolve to Telegram FZ-LLC / the official store listing.

SmartScreen / Gatekeeper keeps blocking — is the installer fake?

First-run OS prompts are common for official installs. Verify the digital signature / publisher is Telegram FZ-LLC, then choose Run anyway / Open. If the file came from a mirror, forum zip, or “modded desktop,” stop and re-download from the official download page.

Can I log into Desktop without my phone nearby?

First linking usually uses phone QR scan; the login screen also offers phone-number verification if you can receive a code. With no signed-in phone and no code delivery, fix mobile install or SMS delivery first — never scan a “login for you” QR someone else sent.

Microsoft Store / Mac App Store vs Desktop from telegram.org — any real difference?

All are legitimate. The site build often updates faster; store builds are convenient. Pick one and confirm publisher Telegram FZ-LLC — don’t mix in random “modded desktop” zips.

Desktop chats work but files are slow or I keep dropping — what first?

Check the PC’s own proxy stability (the phone’s VPN does not automatically cover Desktop), then try another node or fix OS proxy conflicts. Don’t “fix” it with an unknown “accelerated” desktop client.
